The alarm goes off and u skip it. 5 minutes after you hear the second one begging you to get up but skip again. Last alarm begging you in the corner to wake up but you are not going to take the bus or metro to reach anywhere. You are just going to turn on your laptop and get on zoom. And that’s all you have to do. No makeup needed, no brushing teeth, no brushing hair, nothing. You don’t even have to change your clothes. Sounds so easy but it can get kind of dark too.
Just like any other virtual mater, e-learning can have its own negative and positive effects. It’s just a matter of how you use it and try to get the best experience out of it. For some time staying in your bed and trying to follow your course online might sound fun but trust me it can lead you to dark places.
You need to get out of that bed at some point. You need to pay more attention to your zoom screen rather than your phone screen. You need to stop watching TikToks while following your prof talking in the background.
It’s hard though, I understand. I struggle myself with it for a while. For a good 4 months at least, that’s a whole term and then I realized we are going to be stuck here for a while. I mean I started my graduate diploma online and look at me. I am expecting to finish it in less than 4 months and things are still online.
I can’t imagine how hard it can be for some undergraduate students though. Having their exams online, that is something else. I was having a chat the other day with a friend and he was just not okay with it. His internet connection was just not cooperating.
So to future students, really think it through before signing up to do your studies online. Are you really for this life? And how can you get the best experience out of it? At the end of the day, studying online is a heavyweight all on your shoulder and you are the only one that must recognize is it for you or not.
One tip that I can give you though is to manage your time. MANAGE YOUR TIME, and yea I went all Caps to tell you how important that is. Get yourself the latest calendar if you can or even aboard. Write down your classes, your assignment, your exams, and your upcoming material. Organize them accordingly and try to stay within the time limit, and don’t procrastinate. Just do it, like Nike used to say, just do it.
Overall, one can benefit from it a lot. You save so much money, so much time by staying in and not spending monthly charges for the commute but then again there will be the days which you miss the company of your peers. For now, we are obliged to live with it so the best way is to make the most out of it.
So here is a list I made myself to actually enjoy the process and not harm myself :
- Wake up at least 20 minutes before the course begins
- Make sure you eat, and you have enough energy
- Always have snacks and water by your side
- Change out of your pajamas, put something comfy
- Find a place which you are comfortable even if it is your bed, your posture is important, If the office desk is too tiring then just change your location
- Try to keep your camera on so that you can engage more. An off-camera really mess up the engagement factor
- Take a break in between
- After the session spend at least 30 minutes away from any digital screen, let your eyes rest
- Try to keep your phone away from you, in fact, no TikToking while having your course
- Don’t Check your emails and the latest news on Twitter, they can wait
- Try to take notes as you would normally do
- Maximize staying on zoom no more than 4 hours per day
- And finally get up from your seat, stretch and continue . . .
At the end of the day, it's not all dull and desperate, some managed to make the best out of it so it is up to you which path you will choose. And remember a little bit of Zoom prank won't hurt nobody !
